What You Should Know About Whirlpool Dishwashers
Results from the JD Powers 2009 consumer appliance study place Whirlpool dishwashers average in overall satisfaction compared to other brands. Interestingly, the same study gives highest satisfaction ratings to the Kenmore Elite line of dishwashers which are manufactured by Whirlpool.
You should expect to pay between $400 and $1000, depending on the specific features you want. At the higher end of the price range you will get stainless steel construction, good energy efficiency, 5 or 6 cycles (including automatic and delicate cycles) and quiet (less than 52 decibel) operation.
In the middle range, you will get many of the same features, but a plastic tub instead of stainless and less quiet (56-59 decibel) operation. At the lower end of the price range, you will find models that are noisier, less energy efficient, have lower capacity (standard) tubs and feature 4 cycles.
Whirlpool and Whirlpool Gold Dishwasher Product Families
As of November 2009, Whirlpool groups their 24″ dishwashers into two product families: Whirlpool and Whirlpool Gold.
If you are looking for a basic dishwasher that cleans well at a price point of around $500, consider the energy star rated Whirlpool dishwasher models. All models in the Whirlpool series have visible controls, feature at least 4 cycles with up to 6 options.
Noise output is a bit worse than average. If you want to spend a bit less, several models in this series feature a standard tub instead of a tall tub and are not EnergyStar certified.
Whirlpool Gold Series
Whirlpool Gold series dishwashers come with up to 6 cycles and 6 options, making them more feature rich than most dishwashers in the $600-$800 price range. They are all EnergyStar rated and consume about 4.4 gallons of water for a regular load, which is better than average. With stainless steel tall tub liners on the top models, Whirlpool Gold dishwashers are a bit better than average in noise output (52-54 decibels).
