Special Drawing Rights are supplementary foreign exchange reserve assets maintained by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The ISO currency code of Special Drawing Rights is XDR. The XDR is the unit of account for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and is not a currency per se. XDRs as an alternative represent a claim to currency held by International Monetary Fund member countries for which they may be exchanged. It was formed in 1969 to addition a shortfall of preferred foreign exchange reserve assets, explicitly gold and the US Dollar.
