Eczema And Breast Milk

It is very often that you get to see babies suffering from Eczema. And it is usually got from breastfeeding. There may be other causes for the baby contracting eczema, but breastfeeding cannot be dismissed from being the main reason for getting eczema. Eczema is basically a skin problem where the skin gets red and itchy for no reason at all. It can occur in babies of age two to six months too.

Babies get eczema has a rosy rash on his cheeks. This rash disappears as suddenly as it comes. However, if there is a family history of eczema, then there is a chance of it staying till he is older. Studies have shown that babies who are exclusively breastfed tend to have a lower incidence of eczema when compared to babies fed on processed infant formula. These studies thus made experts feel that babies tend to get skin disorders like eczema if fed processed cow’s milk instead of natural breast milk. However, there have been incidents lately of breastfed babies also developing signs of eczema. Even after eliminating other causes, mother’s milk still seemed to be the most probable cause of eczema in babies.

However, though not all experts agree with these observations, eczema in the breastfed baby is actually related to the mother’s breast milk. This is most probably due to the breast milk getting contaminated with the mother’s consumption of dairy products. So taking this point into consideration, it was thought that by avoiding all dairy products, the mother prevents her baby’s condition of eczema from worsening.

However, even with avoiding dairy products, it will take some time for the mother to actually see some improvement in her baby’s eczema. It is always better for the mother to avoid dairy products as often as possible. She should make it a point to always read labels of the food she consumes so that she is sure that they are dairy-free. However, while eating dairy-free, she should focus on foods she enjoys eating.

This is to minimize her cravings for dairy products. She should then start making the list of the dairy-free food products she enjoys eating. Whenever she comes to like a dairy-free food, she should add that product to her daily list. In the process, she should make sure of getting her essential nutrients from other foods to compensate the dairy foods she doesn’t eat.

Hydrocortisone cream should be used to treat the baby’s eczema. This helps in reducing the inflammation and itching that is associated with eczema. Apply hydrocortisone cream on the baby after giving him a nice soak, and before putting him to bed. This relieves the nighttime itching that may wake the baby. Actually, eczema can be avoided in more than one way. The mother watching dairy products is only one way. There are other means available, and the mother should study about this. This helps in the growth of a healthier and disease-free baby.
