BCCI announced on 17 January 2008 that “Set Max” the India’s Sony Entertainment Television network and “World Sport Group (WSG)” of Singapore secured the rights of the IPL global broadcasting. The record deal has a cost of $1.026 billion and the duration of ten years. As per the deal the conglomerate will pay $918 million for the telecast rights and $108 million for the tournament’s promotion to the BCCI. The preliminary plan was that the 20% of these deal value would go to IPL, 8% for the prize money and 72% would be spread to the franchisees who would participate from 2008 to 2012, after the duration the IPL will be public and list its shares. Tournament and Salary Rules

A team can get players through five ways: The annual auction, signing uncapped players, signing domestic players, trading players and signing replacements. For the trading case, a player can be traded only with his permission and the franchise could pay the difference if there is any between the old and new contract. But the new contract is valued more than the older one and the difference have to be shared amid the player and the franchise selling the player.

Some of the team composition rules are as follows:

  • Minimum squad of 16 players, a coach and one physiotherapist.
  • Maximum 10 foreign players can be included on the squad and no more than 4 foreign players can play in the playing XI.
  • At least 14 Indian players have to be included in the squad.
  • At least 6 players must be included from the BCCI under-22 pool in each squad.

IPL games exploit television timeouts and there is no time duration in which teams must finish their innings. But there will be a penalty if the umpires find teams abuse this privilege. Each team has to take “strategic timeout”, a two-and-a-half-minute break during each innings. The bowling team must be taken the timeout between the 6th to 10th over and another by the batting team must be taken between the 11th to 16th over.

Salary cap

Each franchise can spend in the first player auction is maximum $5 million. The minimum annual salary of an U22 player is $20,000 and for others $50,000 is the minimum annual salary.

Prize money

The IPL offered a total prize money of 40 crore Indian Rupees, whereas the winning team budget is 15 crore, the first runners up will get 10 crore, the second runners up will get 7.5 crores and the fourth placed team also get 7.5 crores. However, the ICL was not accepted by the BCCI and the ICC, also the BCCI were not satisfied with the committee members of the ICL executive board. To stop players from joining the ICL, the BCCI decided to enlarged the prize money of their own domestic competitions and rules lifetime bans on players who will join with the ICL. In 2008, the BCCI declared to launch the Indian Premier League which is among the first of all kinds in the cricketing world. The league was based on the NBA in the United States and the Premier League of England. In order to decide the owners for the first IPL, an auction was apprehended on 24 January 2008 with a total prices of the franchises costing approximately $400 million. Finally, the winning bidders were declared as well as the teams would be based in cities: Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai. The franchises were sold for a total of $723.59 million and the Indian Cricket League soon started in 2008.
