The Latvian ice hockey team represents Latvia in the international ice hockey.

The ice hockey Latvian team is currently positioned at 10th in the IIHF world ranking. The team is administrated by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation.

Their best ever achievement in the IIHF World Championships was 7th place in 1997, 2004 and 2009.

The second best achievement of them is in the 2014 World Championship where they have finished at 11th place.

Their best performance it the Olympics games are at 2014 Winter Olympics where they have lost by 1–2 against Canada.

Currently, they have 4,271 Latvian Ice Hockey players which is the 0.21% of their present population.

Best Ice Hockey Players of Latvia

In the list of best ice hockey player of Latvia, some names are comes regularly at this moment such as: Sergejs Žoltoks, Kārlis Skrastiņš, Artūrs Irbe, Sandis Ozoliņš, Harolds Šnepsts, Helmuts Balderis , Juris Kudrašovs, Jarrod Skalde, Āris Brīmanis, Mike Knuble.

Latvian hockey fight back in the year of 1950 and 1960, the Dynamo was stuck in the second tier of the Soviet League. However a couple of legends (forward Helmuts Balderis and Coach Viktor Tikhonov) arrived during the end of 60’s to save the day.

In the 1973-74 Soviet League season, Balderis’ offensive skills and Tikhonov’s discipline helped the Dinamo to reach back on the top tier and restore itself as a better team of Soviet League until the fall down of the Soviet Union in the early on 90’s. In 1977, both Tikhonov and Balderis transferred to the CSKA Moscow club, but the correlation of them was pretty tense, as Balderis habitually rebelled to Tikhonov’s very dictatorial and abusive. Later on, Balderis became the first Latvian to be listed for the NHL and the first Latvian who played there.

 

History of Latvian Ice Hockey Team

In February 15th 1909, first time ice hockey sport was played in Latvia between Union vs. Strēlnieka Dārzs. In 1930, the Latvian Winter Sports Federation opening to fully support of Latvian ice hockey and the team was incorporated within the IIHF in 1931. The next year, they had participated in the 1932 European Championship and they took part in the World Championship in 1933 at Prague.

Earlier to 1970, the Rīga Sports Palace construction was started. Before that they hadn’t any indoor rink in Latvia. For this reason, all ice hockey games were played on frozen ponds or on outdoor flooded surfaces that was extremely reliant on the temperature.

During the Second World War, ice hockey Latvia was survived against all odds. There was a chance that the Soviets disbanded all of existing hockey teams to swap them with new team including the Dinamo Riga where the senior clubs were revived with the appearance of the Germans in the country.
