National Animal of Barbados

The national animal of Barbados is Mahi-mahi. Mahi-mahi is a Hawaiian word means common dolphinfish. Barbados’s national animal, Mahi-mahi, is known as a common dolphinfish, and it is a smaller pompano dolphinfish (C. equisells). They are also known as the world’s fastest growing fish. It represents the gentleness, playfulness, serenity, intelligence. That’s why the mahi-mahi is considered as the national animal of Barbados.

Usually, Mahi-mahi found in offshore under the floating things like big ships, etc. People can found the fish in the sea areas of Barbados. There is no information about the number of mahi-mahi in Barbados, but we can guess Barbados have a huge number of this fish. And as the report of IUCN RED LIST, they count the fish as least concern. As we can see a dolphin fish in the symbol of the coat of arms so, the mahi-mahi is not only a national animal but also a national symbol of Barbados.

The mahi-mahi is a colorful dolphin but not at all related to the marine mammal dolphins. It is an interesting, different kind of fish who has a dull face with a divided caudal tail and a dorsal fin that runs the length of its body. Mahi-mahi is a brightly colored commonly golden-green and blue color and their underside is yellow-white color. They also have irregular patches of metallic blues and greens on their backs and sides. The mahi-mahi grows to 3 feet long, but they caught at almost 6 feet. They love to eat small oceanic fishes, juveniles of large fishes, etc. The mahi-mahi is also a sports fish, and few organizations classify them as a healthy eating fish.

In summary, the mahi-mahi is a beautiful, gentle, fastest growing fish in the world. So, they had considered as the national animal symbol of Barbados.
