History of Sydney Thunder
In the Big Bash League 2015–16, the Thunder ended their group stage matches in the top half of the table and finishing at 4th overall. The Hobart Hurricanes started well as wining the first three matches of the season and boasting a squad including Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Michael Hussey and Jacques Kallis. The Thunder soon became the favorites to win the competition.
In their final game of the Big Bash League 2015–16 season, the Thunder have defeated the Sydney Sixers for the second time in their history to make the Big Bash final. They have faced the Adelaide Strikers at Oval in the first semifinal game and winning convincingly. Then the Thunder has contested against the Stars in the Finals. The Big Bash final was held at Melbourne Cricket Ground in 24 January 2016 and resulted in the Sydney Thunder’s defeat of the Stars.
The Sydney Thunder franchise also sweep up the titles as the women’s team won the first women’s title on the same ground. The men’s game also presented a contest of two captains as Hussey brothers (Michael and David) went against each other on their mother’s birthday.
Michael Hussey was announced his retirement from the all kinds of domestic cricket during BBL05, at the end of the competition and he was announced the club’s Director who will be responsible for managing recruitment, facilities, contracts and scouting for the BBL squad.
Sydney Thunder was the most watched sports team in Australia during 2015-16 seasons with an average television audience of 1.2m.
