United States is one of the most successful national ice hockey teams in the world and one of the strongest members of the “Big Six” along with Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Czech Republic.

American Best Ice Hockey Players

American hockey had a lot of talents in the 1980 to 1990 with several top NHL stars like Jeremy Roenick, Tony Amonte, Brett Hull, Kevin Stevens, Doug Weight, Tom Barasso, Chris Chelios, John LeClair, Mike Richter, Brian Leetch, Pat Lafontaine, Keith Tkachuk and Mike Modano. Consequently, the team won the World Cup at 1996 and achieved a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in 2002.

History of American Ice Hockey Team

The United States achieved two gold medals in the Winter Olympics at the 1960 and 1980. More recently, US ice hockey team won two silver medals in Winter Olympics at the 2002 and 2010.

The United States have won the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 but was unable to secure the title at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 as they lost against Finland in the semifinals game and was ejected before group play ended in the 2016. The US ice hockey team’s most recent achievement on the World Championships came with a bronze medal in 2015. They won the competition in 1933.

The US ice hockey team’s biggest success was the “Miracle on Ice” at the Winter Olympics in 1980 when they beaten the greatly favored Soviet Union approaching to a gold medal.

As the hockey is not a most popular sport in the US, the “Miracle” is regularly listed as one of the record achievements in the history of American sports. In the 1960, The Americans also won the gold medal games at Squaw Valley, California.

However, after several months at IIHF World Championship the US ice hockey team performed their worst record in the history after losing all three games on the first round. And they eliminated from medal competition and positioned them lower the 12th place.

However, US ice hockey team performed well in the 2011 championship after winning all three matches in the relegation round.
