History of The Flag

The Alaska state flag is one of the few state flags in America that is older than the state that it represents.

It was adopted when Alaska was an American territory rather than a full state, and it has represented Alaska without any changes ever since that time. In 1927, a contest was held by the American Legion.

The contest was for children, and the goal of the contest was to design a future flag to represent Alaska. The winner of the contest was a 13-year-old named Benny Benson, beating out approximately 700 other designs.

More than 30 years before Alaska was to become a state, the Alaska Department of the American Legion sponsored a territorial contest for Alaska State Flag. The flag of Alaska was created in 1927 by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old Alaska native.

Winning the contest in 1927, the design of Benny Benson was chosen to represent the future State flag of Alaska. To celebrate his achievement, Benson was awarded $1,000 and an engraved watch. Benny looked to the sky for the symbols he included in his design.

In The State Flag, The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, an Alaskan flower. The North Star is for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly in the union. The Dipper is for the Great Bear.
