History of The Flag

The birth of the Arizona State Flag can be traced back to the 1910 National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio before Arizona officially entered the Union.

Shooting matches began at Camp Perry in 1907 and rapidly developed into a prestigious annual event that continues to this day. The first and only state flag of Arizona came into use in 1917.

The state government formally authorized the design seven years after it was first used, and there were still dissenting votes in the state legislature at that time.

The bill passed into law without being signed by the governor, who did not give his reasons for declining to sign it.

On February 27, 1917, Just five years after attaining statehood The Flag of Arizona was adopted. Unlike many other state flags, which were based on military colors or other banners flown during the Civil War (1861–65), State Flag of Arizona design was inspired by the state’s own natural setting.

Arizona State Flag was designed by Charles W. Harris, the adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard, and the first copy was sewn by Nancy Hayden, wife of Carl Hayden, who served Arizona in the U.S. Congress for 56 years.

Before its adoption in 1917, the State Flag of Arizona was carried by the Arizona National Guard rifle team during a trip to Ohio.
