The Official name of California State flag is “The Bear Flag“. The precursor of the flag was first flown during the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt and was also known as the Bear Flag.

The Flag was Adopted on February 3, 1911, around 107 years ago. The Design of The flag is Based on flag flown during the Bear Flag Revolt. Contains a single red star, a red stripe along the bottom, and a California grizzly bear. The modern state flag is white with a wide red strip along the bottom.

History of The Flag

In 1846 Californian settlers hoisted a flag with a red star to show that they wanted independence from Mexico.

Ten years later the red star reappeared, together with the components of today’s flag, when a further attempt was made to form an independent state.

The grizzly bear is seen as the ideal symbol of ferocity. During the earthquake of 1906, the original design for the flag was lost. A new one was made in 1911.

During the 19th century, a coupled to the declaration of Alta California’s independence. During this time, The State flag of California was used during the rebellion that became known as the Lone Star Flag of California. California state Flag featured a red five-pointed star on a white field.

The star from that flag is represented on the modern state flag of today. It is believed that the State flag of California depicting the grizzly bear has been used since the 19th century. The original  California state Flag featuring a bear was first used for a brief period during 1846.

It wasn’t until 1911 when the bear flag was made the official State flag of California. The 1911 law outlined the specifications of the flag that is still in use today.
