History of The Flag
Throughout Florida’s history, many banners and flags have been used. This includes the Cross of Burgundy used in St. Augustine and the Crown of Castile used in Pensacola.
When the state went under the control of Great Britain in the 19th century, the original union flag was used for a short period of time. The current flag was last modified on November 6, 1900. This was following the changes made to the state seal, which is featured prominently on the flag.
In 2001, a survey conducted by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) placed Florida’s flag 34th in design quality out of the 72 Canadian provincials, U.S. state and U.S. territorial flags ranked.
Between 1821 and 1861, There is no State Flag of Florida. Between 1868 and 1900, State Flag of Florida consisted of a white field with the state seal in the center. In a discrepancy, however, a later version of the state seal depicts a steamboat with a white Flag of Florida that includes a red saltire, similar to current Florida State Flag.
After the Civil War, Florida was the first Southern state to adopt a flag of its own. On August 6, 1868, the state seal was designated to appear in the center of a white Flag of Florida. the design showed an American Indian woman on a promontory extending into the water where a steamboat was sailing.
