History of The Flag

In 1916, during the celebrations of the centennial anniversary of the 100 years since Indiana joined the US, the General Assembly of the state of Indiana resolved to design and adopt a flag.

The state tasked the Daughters of the American Revolution to hold a competition for the most appropriate flag design. The best designer was to be awarded one hundred dollars. Over 200 designs were submitted with Paul Hadley of Mooresville design winning the contest and the cash prize.

In 1916, the centennial of Indiana statehood, the Daughters of the American Revolution held a design competition for State Flag of Indiana. The Flag of Indiana is defined by law as having design elements in either gold or buff, although in practice gold is almost always used.

A total of 19 stars ring the torch, recalling that the state was the 19th to join the Union. The name of the state is displayed above the largest star. The Flag of Indiana was defined as the state banner because, according to an act of the state legislature in 1901, State Flag of Indiana was technically the national flag of the United States.

In 1955 the General Assembly changed its classification from state banner to State Flag of Indiana “in addition to the American flag.”
