The Official Name of Commonwealth of Kentucky Flag is“The Bluegrass State”. It was adopted on March 26, 1918. The Flag Was Designed by Jesse Cox Burgess. The flag consists of the Commonwealth’s seal on a blue field, enclosed by the words “Commonwealth of Kentucky” higher than and sprigs of wildflower.

The two individuals on the seal, a pioneer and a statesman, represent all the people. They are acting out the which means of Kentucky’s motto: “United we tend to Stand; Divided we tend to Fall”. Sprays of wildflower extend in a very 0.5 revolve around the image.

The state motto: “United we tend to Stand, Divided we tend to Fall” circles them. The catchword comes from the lyrics of “The Liberty Song”, a loyal song from the American Revolution.

History of The Flag

Once Kentucky became part of the Union in 1792, the state adopted the 15-star flag of the Union. The U.S. flag was kept as the unofficial state flag for many years that followed. During the American Civil War, the flag of the Confederate States, as well as the flag of the Union, flew over Kentucky with prominence varying on location and the progression of the war.

The flag was designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, an art teacher in Frankfort, the state capital. The flag was adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly on March 26, 1918, and finalized the process by including a drawing in the statutes on 1928.

Although Kentucky didn’t have an official State Flag of Kentucky until 1918, the state has had many Flags of Kentucky state to representing various affiliations and countries flying over the bluegrass. It was not until 1961 that the Kentucky Legislature officiated the design, colors, and specifications for the State Flag of Kentucky.

Major Taylor L. Davidson, while serving the Adjutant General, spearheaded the project by researching the history and early designs of the Kentucky State Flag. The Flag of Kentucky consists of the Commonwealth’s seal on a navy blue field, surrounded by the words “Commonwealth of Kentucky” above and sprigs of goldenrod, the state flower, below. The seal depicts a pioneer and a statesman embracing.
