History of The Flag

In 1858, Minnesota replaced Maine as being the most northerly state. Another idealized landscape, with the rising sun in the background, as an Indian ride past a farmer cultivating the prairie. The opposite side of the flag was plain blue.

Minnesota adopted this as the state flag in April 1893. On March 19, 1957, a new design was established; the background of the flag, like that of many other state flags, was henceforth to be blue on both sides. The central design from the original flag of 1893 appeared in circular form on both sides of the new flag.

The Flag of Minnesota is rectangular and consists of a design on a medium blue background. According to the official statute Minnesota State Flag contains a thin gold border and gold fringe, however, this is rarely used.

The star at the top of the State Flag of Minnesota symbolizes the North Star. The Flag of Minnesota design in the center is surrounded by pink-and-white lady’s slippers, the state flower.

The law creating the 1957 State Flag of Minnesota is located in Chapter 1 of the Official State Statutes. The chapter covers state symbols, sovereignty, and other general issues.
