History of The Flag

The first flag of Nevada was created by Governor John Sparks and Col. Harry Day in 1905. It was based strongly on Nevada’s natural resources of gold and silver. The blue of the flag was based directly on the color of the flag of the United States.

The current design came about because of a design contest held in 1926. The design was created by Louis Shellback III, and what followed was a disagreement between the state legislature over the placement of the state’s name on the flag.

The third Flag of Nevada was chosen through a statewide contest to find a design that was less expensive to produce. The design chosen was submitted by Don Shellbach III in 1929. The Nevada State Flag remained in use until 1991.

The fourth/current State Flag of Nevada was adopted in 1991. Senator Bill Raggio introduced Senate Bill 396 to amend the old flag statute. The second Nevada State Flag, “All for Our Country” was designed by Miss Clara Crisler, a Carson City educator and historian, in 1915.

Crisler’s design was an attempt at having a state flag more representative of Nevada. Using the State Seal as the main basis of the Flag of Nevada, it depicted a Nevada that embraced mining, industry, agriculture and its history.
