History of The Flag

A number of U.S. state flags, based on the military colors of local militias, originally had different designs on the obverse and reverse, but the expense and complexity of their manufacture gradually led to their replacement by simpler banners.

Oregon is now the only state with such a flag, just as Paraguay is the only country to have a national flag with a different design on each side. The present design used on the flag was adopted in 1903 when Oregon achieved statehood.

On February 26, 1925, Gov. Walter Pierce signed Senate Bill 195, An Act Adopting a State Flag of Oregon, and Adj. Gen. George A. White asked the Meier & Frank Department Store in Portland to create the first Flag of Oregon.

The Oregon legislature enacted a law in 1953 requiring that the State Flag of Oregon be flown over schools, courthouses, and other public buildings. In 1962, the state’s procurement office issued detailed specifications for the Oregon State Flag, which were amended in 1966.

The Flag of Oregon official proportions (height to width) are 500:833; in practice, flags are usually made in proportions of 3:5 or 2:3.
