The Rhode Island flag was formally adopted on July 27, 1640. Since Rhode Island has maintained the same flag for the last 378 years. The flag of Rhode Island features three colors: gold, white and blue. The background of the flag is white, and anchor and 13 five-pointed stars are gold.

The ribbon below the anchor is blue, while the word “Hope” is spelled out in gold letters. Sometimes, the flag is decorated with golden fringe around its edges.

History of The Flag

The anchor was first used by Rhode Island in 1647 as a state seal when the four original towns of Providence, Warwick, Portsmouth, and Newport united under a single charter. The symbol may have indicated that these four towns were coastal.

Rhode Island became the thirteenth state on May 29, 1790, but did not adopt a state flag until March 30, 1877. This original flag displayed an anchor with thirteen blue stars unlike the flag of today which uses yellow stars and the word ‘Hope’. The current flag was adopted on May 19, 1897.

In 1897, the State Flag of Rhode Island first nonmilitary was adopted. The Flag of Rhode Island shall be white, five feet and six inches fly and four feet and ten inches deep on the pike. The State Flag of Rhode Island shall be edged with yellow fringe.  

The pike shall be surmounted by a spearhead and the length of the pike shall be nine feet, not including the spearhead. With the motto “Hope” in golden letters thereon, the whole surrounded by thirteen (13) golden stars in a circle. The Flag of Rhode Island shall be edged with yellow fringe.
