The flag of the state of Tennessee consists of an emblem on a field of red, with a strip of blue on the fly. The Tennessee flag was formally adopted on February 3, 1905.

This flag was designed by Colonel LeRoy Reeves, an attorney, and member of the Tennessee National Guard. There are three colors used in the Tennessee state flag: red, white and blue. The rectangular field is red. In the center of the flag are three white five-pointed stars.

These stars are housed inside a blue circle trimmed with a strip of white. On the edge of the flag is a thin white horizontal stripe and a wider blue horizontal stripe.

History of The Flag

The flag was designed by Colonel LeRoy Reeves of the Tennessee National Guard, a Johnson City attorney who was serving in the Tennessee National Guard in 1905 when he created the new flag design. The Tennessee State Legislature officially adopted the flag on April 17, 1905.

Alongside the state flag, there are other flags used by the government of Tennessee. The flag for the Governor of Tennessee has been in use since 1939. It is a scarlet flag, with four stars, one in each corner, and the State Military Crest, a tree with three white stars, in the center. The Tennessee General Assembly has its own flag as well.

The Tennessee Historical Society’s collection includes a number of flags, including the original State Flag of Tennessee designed by Lee Roy (LeRoy) Reeves of Johnson City in 1905. This is the current design of the Flag of Tennessee and features three stars bound indissolubly together in a circle of blue with a rim of white on a red field bordered by an edge of white and a bar of blue.

By law, the highest star is to be displayed to the upper confined corner of the Tennessee State Flag. Reeves added the blue and white trim as a design element so that the Flag of Tennessee would show all three colors when hanging limp.
