The flag of Virginia consists of the obverse of the seal against a blue background. The Virginia flag was formally adopted on February 1, 1950. It was Designed by Charles Keck. There are several colors used in the design of the state flag of Virginia.

However, the main color is blue or azure which makes up the background. The flag of Virginia features the obverse side of the state seal. This side is the official seal that is used on all official government papers. This seal depicts the Roman virtue of Virtus, a symbol for peace. The figure holds a long spear and has a sword of authority that remains sheathed. She is posed in such a way that indicates victory.

History of The Flag

Virginia was the 10th state admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788. It was one of the original 13 colonies settled in America. Virginia adopted an official state flag in 1861 at the start of the civil war when it seceded from the Union.

The flag has a deep blue field featuring the obverse side state seal in its center. An obverse side is a side that is meant to bear the principle design.

The design on the obverse now appears on the Virginia State Flag. It features a woman personifying virtue and dressed as an Amazon. Virginia flew its Flag of Virginia and the flags of the Confederacy after it joined the Confederate States of America, CSA, in 1861.

After the end of the Civil War in 1865, the state has continued to fly its official State Flag of Virginia with one minor change to the flag itself – in 1930, white fringe was added to the flag when used for stately occasions. The seal and has remained the same since it was officially adopted in 1861.

There have been some description changes by the legislature. In 1931, the ornamental wreath surrounding the seal was defined as Virginia creeper. In 1949, the various design elements were assigned specific colors.
