State Animal of Massachusetts

Boston terrier is The National State Animal of Massachusetts. Massachusetts has several state animals. Most famous among them are the state dog, the Boston terrier; the state cat, the tabby; the state horse Morgan and the state marine mammal, the right whale. These symbols of Dog and animal were recognized by the state legislature in 1979, 1988, 1970 and 1980 respectively. Massachusetts State Animal and other national symbols are outlined in Chapter 2 of the General Laws of Massachusetts.

This official document designates over 60 state symbols for the state of Massachusetts. The earliest animal symbol to be adopted was the Morgan horse in 1970, while the most recent state symbol as of 2014 was the garter snake, adopted in 2008. The Boston Terrier first purebred dog developed in America in 1869.  There is a cross between an English bulldog and an English terrier. The Boston Terrier was recognized by the Legislature in 1979 as Massachusetts State Dog organization. The legislation was introduced by Hon. Gregory W. Sullivan, 12th Norfolk District.

The Massachusetts State Animal Boston Terrier is a breed of dog originating in the United States of America. This “American Gentleman” was accepted as a Dog in 1893 by the American Kennel Club as a non-sporting breed and many states dog. The Color of Boston Terrier and markings are important when distinguishing this breed to the AKC standard. The Animal should be either black, brindle or seal with white markings. Bostons are small and compact with a short tail and erect ears.

The AKC says that Massachusetts State Animal Boston Terrier is highly intelligent and very easily trained.  They are friendly and At a Time They can be stubborn. The average lifetime of the span of a Boston is around 11 to 13 years, though some can live well into their teens. The American Kennel Club ranked the Boston Terrier as the 21st most popular breed in 2016 in the US State.

The State Animal of Massachusetts Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well-balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence. Several health issues are of concern in the Boston Terrier: cataracts (both juvenile and adult type), cherry eye, luxating patellas.
