State Beverage of Massachusetts

State Beverage of Massachusetts

Cranberry Juice Is The Official State Beverage of Massachusetts. Cranberry juice was Accepted as the official state beverage of Massachusetts in 1970. This was a tribute to the great Massachusetts Cranberry industry (cranberry is also the official state berry). The Massachusetts State Beverage Cranberry is in the same family as the blueberry (Vaccinium); both are native North American fruits introduced to settlers by native Americans. Cranberry juice was first made by colonists in 1683, but not produced commercially until 1930.

Cranberries evolved in unique wetland conditions created by melting glaciers (now commercially cultivated in “bogs” through the northern United States). This tart, the ruby-colored berry was first named “crane berry” by the Pilgrims, presumably because just prior to blooming, the flower and stem resemble the head of a sandhill crane (these birds also love cranberries, and were seen wading the bogs, scooping them up). Commercial cultivation of cranberries began in the early 1800s in Massachusetts.

Some vines on Cape Cod are more than 150 years old. State Beverage of Massachusetts Cranberries are high in vitamin C and have more antioxidants than any other fruit. 70% of harvested cranberries are processed into juice, concentrates, and juice blends. The recent introduction of Massachusetts State Beverage white cranberry juice has been a boon to growers by enabling two harvests a year (one in the summer for the white berry, and a second harvest in the fall for the red berry).

The Health Benefits of Cranberry Juice:

Heart Health

Cranberries also contain phytonutrients. This gives them an anti-inflammatory property. Inflammation plays a role in damaging blood vessels over time. The damaged vessels then attract plaque, causing atherosclerosis. Phytonutrients in cranberries could help guard against inflammation, delaying the process and offering protection against heart disease.

Fight Tumors

As cranberries contain antioxidant components and water, drinking their juice can help keep your body from developing free radical and carcinogenic cells, which can lead to the development of cancerous tumors. Drinking the juice every day can keep your body clean as your kidney will effectively flush out all toxins.

Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, a compound commonly found in plants. It’s believed that this compound can help prevent UTIs by stopping bacteria from attaching itself to the lining of the urinary tract. If the bacteria can’t grow and spread, it can’t cause an infection.
