“Hula” Is The Official State Dance of Hawaii. Hula was adopted as the official dance of the state in 1999. Hula is a uniquely Traditional Hawaiian Dance accompanied by chant or song that preserves and perpetuates the stories, traditions, and culture of Hawaii. Hawaiian legends tell stories of hula beginning on the islands of Molokai and Kauai.

Today, this State Dance of Hawaii enchanting art form has become a worldwide symbol of Hawaiian culture and the beauty of Hawaii’s people. Hula Is Very Popular form of dance in the U.S. mainland, Japan and even Europe. Hawaii State Dance Hula is the soul of Hawaii expressed in motion. Molokai is Hawaiian in another special way of Dance. Molokai is widely held to be the birthplace of hula.

The legend has it that Laka, the goddess of the hula, journeyed from island to island, sharing the dance with all who wished to learn. Each of her graceful movements was layered with spiritual meaning, bringing to life the history, traditions, and genealogy of the Hawaiian people. Although it began as a form of worship during religious ceremonies, it gradually evolved into a form of entertainment.


During the 19th century, the hula almost vanished because the missionaries considered it vile and heathen. King David Kalakaua is generally regarded as saving it during the late 1800s when he formed his own troupe and encouraged the dancers to learn the old hula.


There are two Types of Hawaii State Dance Hula: 1) Hula Kahiko 2) Hula Auana.


Hula Kahiko: Hula Kahiko is the Ancient style of hula tied to hula lineage with motions, voice, and choreography that comes from an old place, patterned after ancient hula. State Dance of Hawaii Hula Kahiko can also be ancient hula still being danced today. This unique style of hula is performed to chants and is accompanied by percussion instruments such as the pahu or ipu (different types of drums). Hawaii State Dance Hula Kahiko requires much training and dedication and is regarded as being a dance of spiritual connection to ancient Hawaii.

Hula Auana: Hula Auana is the modern style of hula, usually coming from a school of hula that has a genealogy, but with new choreography and music. Influenced by contemporary times but with old knowledge, this style of State Dance of Hawaii hula is accompanied by modern instruments such as the ukulele, guitar, steel guitar, bass or piano.
