Massachusetts settlers ate strawberries grown by American Indians as early as 1643. Strawberries spread to California, and by the early 1900s were being grown on a large scale. Today, over 30,000 acres are planted in California each year which results in around one billion pounds of strawberries each year. HEALTH AND WELLNESS BENEFITS OF STRAWBERRIES:
1. LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE:
Strawberries are an excellent source of potassium, which counters the effects of sodium in the body and reduces blood pressure. In addition to battling hypertension and related cardiovascular disease, a diet rich in potassium can help lower mortality risk in general.
The powerful antioxidants in strawberries may work against free radicals, inhibiting tumor growth and decreasing inflammation in the body. These flavonoids, such as anthocyanins, quercetin, and kaempferol act as a defensive line against the development of cancer and tumors.
3. Blood pressure:
Due to their high potassium content, strawberries are recommended to those with high blood pressure to help negate the effects of sodium in the body. Low potassium intake is just as big a risk factor for developing high blood pressure as high sodium intake.
