On August 30 the people of Turkey celebrate Victory Day. It is a national public holiday in Turkey. This day is a very significant day for the people of Turkey. This utterly dignified day commemorates the victory of the Turkish force against Greek forces in the Battle of Dumlupınar which happened in 1922. This battle is very historical in the case of Turkey’s existence. The result of this great war determined the final outcome of the Turkish War of Independence which had been going on from 1919 to 1923.
This day is also known as Armed Forces Day. The significance of this day doesn’t end with this. This great day also honors the Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey. He was elected as the first President of the independent Turkish Republic which was proclaimed on 29 October 1923. Victory Day in Turkey is known as “Zafer Bayramı” in the native tongue.
Though the entirety of the foreign forces staying in Turkey left the country once and for all in the autumn of 1922, the people of Turkey accepted August 30 as their victory day. This day for the first time was celebrated on 30 August 1923. This day was accepted as a national holiday in 1935. Initially this day was first celebrated in only a handful of cities in Turkey which included Ankara, Afyonkarahisar and Izmir.
Victory Day is celebrated with a lot of honor and pride all over the country. The Turkish people hoist their national flag in the honor of this day. The people who actually have directly fought for the independence of this country are treated with great honor and respect. They are the real heroes of this country. The importance of this day can be properly understood through their experiences. Through their sacrifices the people of this country are getting a chance to live in this independent country, breathe the fresh air which smells of independence.
As this day is also known as the armed forced day hence the armed forces of this country displays special programs on this day. The armed forces celebrate this day with special parade and march-pasts. The militart parades are one of the biggest attractions from the festivities of this day. Military Parade takes place in many big cities all over the country. The Air forces celebrate the day with special demo flights of the jet planes. The jet planes which participates in the display flights leaves a red-and-white trail in the sky which symbolizes the national flag of Turkey.
The windows of the buildings are decorated with the flag of Turkey and the image of the great president Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. An official ceremony takes place at Ataturk’s Mausoleum in Ankara which is attended by the State officials and other political leaders. Government institutions and private business organizations remains closed on this day. Schools also remain closed on this day. A special ceremony takes place at the War Academy in Istanbul. On this ceremony all the military promotions are made.
Victory Day is a day of sheer importance to the people of Turkey. The significance of this day cannot be fully expressed in words. This day will always stay in the golden pages of history of this country and celebrated with equal pride and honor as long as this country exists in the face of this world.
